Who can work as an au pair for your family?

EU & EFTA countries

If your au pair is an EU or EFTA citizen, he/she can enter Spain on a valid passport or identity card and work for you. No entry visa is needed. EU and EFTA citizens enjoy freedom of movement. There are no restrictions with regard to the duration of stay or residence. Citizens of those countries may live and work in Spain even if they have already done so in the past.

Canada and New Zealand

Is your au pair from Canada or New Zealand? Great! In this case, this young person may work as an au pair and earn money in Spain. You can find further information with regard to the au pair placement for citizens of those countries in the section Special programmes for Spain. 

The au pair needs to apply for a visa at the Spanish embassy. For this purpose he/she will need an au pair contract.

Other countries

Your au pair does not come from an EU or EFTA country and is no citizen of Canada or New Zealand? In this case, a student visa may be an alternative.

To obtain a student visa, the au pair needs to prove prior to entering Spain:

• that he/she possesses sufficient funds to afford the stay; and
• that he/she is enroled in a Spanish language course (10 hours per week) in his/her host country.

If these requirements are met, the au pair may be granted permission to work for a certain number of hours per week. The au pair should clarify this point beforehand with the Spanish embassy in his/her country.

The au pair may also need the au pair contract from you to apply for the student visa at the Spanish embassy.
